Hi guys. Thank you for answering all our questions. I think for now everything is pretty clear. I have a few question: 1. Do we have an exam? after finishing one course? or we will all pass the course if we pass the assignments? 2.Can you tell me who is behind this generous opportunity? I want to learn more about the CODE THE DREAM. 🙂
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 4:44 pm
We’ll have a short project at the end of each of our class units (Web Basics I & II, Front End I & II, and Back End I & II). Once you finish the content and complete the project, you’re all set to move on to the next class. Code the Dream is a project of Uniting NC. Feel free to read about our mission and staff here: https://www.codethedream.org/about/
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 4:26 pm
How long does an internship last?
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 4:32 pm
Chuck: Internships are not capped at any particular length but depend on a particular intern's skill level and how they are progressing. Most internships last between 6-12 months, but it varies person to person.
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 4:22 pm
For those of you who already did the class, what did you like about it? How is it different than other bootcamps?
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 4:49 pm
I haven't done any other bootcamp other than CTD but I do know some bootcamps are ridiculously expensive and either require a loan or a scholarship. For the CTD class, I really liked the consistency, dedication, and passion the teachers brought. I really liked how whenever I had a question someone could answer me more throughly than than the internet can. The students that were in my cohort were the most awesome dedicated people I ever met and there was no competition whatsoever, everyone was there to learn. When in the classes I learned more than I learned at a computer programming class at a technical college. And believe it or not the class leads to an internship in which you learn a lot, even more than when you were in the class.-Lennda

Kevin: I liked that its a program for anyone no matter experience level. Being free was also a huge plus and the mentors are always there to help you when you’re stuck or to answer any questions.
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 4:30 pm
Chuck: I've never been through another bootcamp so I can't compare my own experiences. I can say a few things though: classes through Code the Dream are free and can even lead to a paid internship that offers great hands on experience with all parts of the development life cycle and a stipend to help you while you are still learning.
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:48 pm
Hello there! After finishing the class, some students will get an internship. So my question, will internship be based in NC, or will it be remote, or in the city of residence? Thanks!
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:49 pm
Irene: after the classes, those invited to the labs/internship will be remote if they are not near our home office.
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:46 pm
Is treehouse the only learning platform you are using for students?
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:46 pm
Treehouse will be providing most of the online videos and tutorials but we will also provide additional teaching and provide mentors for guiding the students through the material - Cruz
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:45 pm
Does it (Age, gender) matter if I'm interested in learning this new skill?
    • Lori replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:48 pm
We believe anyone can learn to code! Everyone is invited to apply regardless of demographic background.
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:43 pm
I already have about 2 years of experience teaching myself how to code but I cannot get a job due to the fact that I don't have a degree, lack of resources, I don't have a mentor and its really hard for me in general because I feel like giving up. How can you help me in terms of job search, internship placement and I don't mind taking a coding challenge to see or know where I am in my learning?
    • Lori replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:53 pm
Hello, Great to hear you already have started learning! Code the Dream was created to help people just like yourself gain experience and then employment. In terms of your current ability, if you are accepted into the program, you will take an assessment. After participating in our series of classes, students are eligible to apply for our paid internship, where they gain real life experience building apps. We believe that is what often makes the difference for people looking for jobs. Code the Dream's program is not a fast process or a quick fix, but we think it is worth it. Hang in there and Don't give up!
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:39 pm
Do you guys offer any courses in video games? If not, can we obtain sources for video game development through the staff? Are there any video game related projects or internships available or will there be?
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:45 pm
Irene: The courses are not specifically designed for video games. We also do not have plans to add video game related internships just yet but we do have a range of projects some of which included a VR app!
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:32 pm
What kind of things do you guys search for in portfolios? How will classes be like with the current pandemic? Do we need to buy any textbooks? Will there be a live coding session during applications?
    • Lori replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:44 pm
We don't expect students to come in with portfolios, but we are interested in knowing if you have had any past experience. The pandemic does not actually change our classes at all, because all classes are online. There is not a live coding session during the application process at this time (though that could change), but you will have to code during the Pre-Work, following a tutorial. Thanks for the question. -Lori
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:28 pm
I currently have a full time job. Will I be able to attend the courses and work my 8hr job at the same time?
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:37 pm
Chuck: The classes are designed to be completed by someone working a full time job. You do need to make a commitment and plan on spending a minimum of 10-20 intense, focused hours per week on the material. Being remote allows greater flexibility for those hours based on your schedule.
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:23 pm
What sort of questions we will have for interview?
    • Lori replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:39 pm
Hi, The interviews are just short 15-minute sessions where we get to know you a little better and learn about your experiences and plans. For more details, you will have to wait for the interview! Thanks, Lori
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:23 pm
I based in Chicago, if I am selected for the program, and was able to go through the internship. What is the probability that I am going to land a full-term role and is the job going to be anywhere or in Chicago where I based? Thanks
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:39 pm
Irene: We do not guarantee landing a job after the internships. However, when you feel ready to search for a job, you can do so anywhere, including Chicago!
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:21 pm
Do all students get internship after finishing the class?
    • Lori replied:
      on March 26, 2020 4:13 pm
One note- the internship will probably not be available to every person who finishes the class, just because as our classes have increased to give opportunity for more people, we may not have the capacity to offer an internship to every person. There is no guarantee. But you certainly have a good chance if you finish the whole series of classes (Web Basics 1&2, then Front End 1&2 or Back End 1&2).
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:37 pm
Not all students may finish the classes. Only the ones who finished all the classes will be able to move onto the internship. - Cruz

I am 59 years old and have been a computer analyst in the early 1990's. I was never a programmer, but have programmed in school. I want to learn modern skills and do a job that I can work from home and be a vital member of the workforce. I do not have funds to be able to go to school. Is Code the Dream an option for me? I also have mentoring skills that might be of help once I learn what I need to learn to code modern apps. Is that a positive factor? I like helping people, it was a vital part of my skill set as an analyst.
    • CTD Interns replied:

Code The Dream's classes are free. They do not require any money and we consider everyone 15 years and older. We would be glad to have you. Please sign up for the classes if you haven't already. - Cruz

What would an ideal candidate look like?
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:21 pm
Irene: an ideal candidate would be someone with a dire desire to learn. Someone that knows that learning anything new takes time, patience and LOTS of practice. I will say that persistence is key! programming in a roller coaster and there are lots of ups and downs so as long as you don't give up, you will get there.

How many people get an opportunity to get your paid internship? What are the qualifications for that, is there a test at the end?

Hi, thanks for your interest. To be eligible for our paid internship, students first complete all of our classes (Web Basics 1 &2 then Front End 1&2 OR Back End 1&2). We have a limited number of internship positions, and it depends on your participation and your ability. Thanks,Lori
  • Someone asked:
    on March 26, 2020 3:05 pm
I have no base on Coding and I have been always interested in learning and getting a job in this field, how should I start this path with CTD and how long it would take me to learn and work in web development?
    • Lori replied:
      on March 26, 2020 4:33 pm
An addition to Irene's message- like any skill it does take time. Our full class regiment lasts 4-6 months and then our interns usually have a few of months of practice apps before they start building real projects. So before getting a job as a developer, it could take a year or more, realistically. But this is an investment in your future!
    • CTD Interns replied:
      on March 26, 2020 3:15 pm
Irene: Start by applying! Do the pre work and go through the classes. If you have no coding background, you will start learning from day #1 and you will NEVER stop learning even after landing a job in tech. To finally say you have “learned” web development varies from person to person depending on the commitment level.

All of the classes are fully remote now and so all of the class material and hours will be done online.

I didn't get a confirmation email that I applied. Should I send it again?

Hi, we're glad you are interested in the class! After you submitted the application, you should have been directed to a Confirmation page. If you send me a quick email with your name, I will double check on your application. -Lori with CTD (lori@codethedream.org)
